Elements of Design

The elements of design are the basic parts that make up the design.  There are 4 basic elements of design.

Color            Line              Shape             Texture

Color

Warm Color -Warm Colors (related to red, orange, yellow) are advancing colors.

They seem to move forward and suggest activity.  They catch your eye.

Cool Colors
Cool Colors (related to blue, violet, and green) are receding colors.
They are restful, relaxing, and calm.

Line - gives direction to a design.

   Vertical line

Horizontal lines

Diagonal lines                         Curved lines

Shape - is the form of the object.

Texture -is how the design feels or looks on the surface.  For example, dots and lines can be used to create a certain surface texture.  Or the surface may appear dull or shiny, smooth or rough.

Principles of Design

The 4 principles of design provide the guidelines for how to fit the elements of design together in order to create a pleasing design.

         Proportion                  balance               rHyThM                Emphasis

Proportion – refers to how the size of one part relates to the size of another part of the design.  Or how the size of one part relates to the size of the whole item.

Balance – refers to how the elements are arranged horizontally or vertically on the in a design.

Formal (Symmetrical) Balance                           Informal (Asymmetrical) Balance

Rhythm – is the feeling of movement in a design created by the use of:
                                             Repetition

Gradation

     Radiation

Emphasis – is the center of interest in a design.  It is the first thing your notice when you look at a design. Such as underlined, bolded, or colored words.

Unity

The ultimate goal of the goal of good design is to achieve Unity in the design.  Unity is achieved when all parts of a design look as if they belong together.

In other words, when the elements and principals of design are used effectively, the goal of Unity is achieved.
