The word science is derived from the Latin word, scientia, which means 'knowledge'. Science is a system of gaining knowledge based on various scientific processes. Through these processes, knowledge is gained, theories are formed, and scientific research is published. It is the goal of Northside ISD Secondary Science to facilitate this body of knowledge that science encompasses into each classroom using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as a foundational approach to instruction.
There are many fields of science. Science is generally broken down into one of three categories: life science, earth science, and physical science. As students progress from grades 6-12, the courses usually become more specific to the various categories.
As of the 2007-2008 school year, all entering freshman (9th grade) will be required to obtain 4 science credits (4 science courses) to graduate from High School under the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement Plan. Northside ISD offers many science courses for students to choose from to fulfill these plans. And, there are two new science courses on the horizon: Earth and Space Science and Engineering!
Here in Northside ISD, we are excited about science!
