Spanish
Honor Society
La Raza Cósmica
Sponsor: M. Guerra
Purpose: The Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (for secondary schools),
sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese,
was organized in 1953 in order to recognize high achievement in Spanish
by students of secondary schools and to promote a continuity of interest
in Hispanic studies.
La Raza Cósmica, John Jay's chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria
Hispanica, was by Mr. Don Musselman in 1987. It was established to honor
those students who are clearly outstanding in their Spanish courses.
Moreover, the organization encourages those who become members to continue
their interest and study in the Hispanic language and culture.
Who can join: All 10th-12th grade students enrolled in Spanish
II, III, IV or IV who have maintained an honor average in the study
of Spanish for at least three semesters. The student must be currently
enrolled in a Spanish class at the time of initial membership. The cumulative
average in Spanish after 5 semesters must be a 90. Honors courses will
include the extra five honors points per semester. These will be used
in the three or five semester average.
