When Melvil
Dewey invented the international library coding system in 1873, he had
no idea that someday you could view the entire text and reference materials
on a machine. Thanks to advances in technology and a grant from the Texas
Education Agency, the Northside
Library and Textbook Services Department is now offering e-books
online for students, employees and their families.
The shared collection is concentrated on nonfiction
titles of general interest suitable for K-12 use. The collection includes
428 titles, plus the availability of 3,000 free e-books titles.
"I think that one of the best things about
this is that students and employees can have access to research materials
- free of charge - at any time of day and night," says Jana Knezek,
Director of Library and Textbook Services. "It is an added tool for
research."
Current titles offer a wide range of topics from
Algebra Success in 20 Minutes a Day and The Acoustic Guitar
to The Worldly Philosophers and Women of Sports.
Knezek hopes to expand the offerings annually.
Suggestions for additional e-books should be made to the John Jay librarian,
Mrs. Strawn.
To
access netlibrary eBooks, you must first create an account with an affiliated
library. This must be done on a NISD networked computer using the web
address provided by the school librarian. Contact the Mrs. Strawn in the
John Jay library for the web address. You will then click on "create
an account" and respond to the remaining prompts for registering.
After the initial registration, you can then access it from home. For
further information, contact Mrs. Strawn.
