Vocal Music Department Courses

Junior Varsity Women

The JV Women’s Choir is made up of all female voices and will perform in 2- or 3-part harmony. This ensemble will be a training ground for beginning and intermediate female singers. Students will learn sight-reading, rhythms, and musical terminology and notation. This group will be exposed to many styles of choral music spanning all major periods of music history. No experience or audition is required to be in this choir. Eligibility (70% in ALL classes) is required for participation for out of school performances.

Varsity Men

The Varsity Men’s Choir is made up of all male voices and will perform in 3- or 4-part harmony. This ensemble will be a training ground for beginning and intermediate male singers. Students will learn sight-reading, rhythms, and musical terminology and notation. This group will be exposed to many styles of choral music spanning all major periods of music history. Currently, no experience or audition is required to participate in this choir. As a Varsity level ensemble, out-of-school performances are common and eligibility (70% in ALL classes) is required for participation.

Varsity Women

The Varsity Women’s Choir is made up of all male voices and will perform in 3- or 4-part harmony. This ensemble will be a training ground for intermediate and advanced female singers. Students will learn sight-reading, rhythms, and musical terminology and notation. This group will be exposed to many styles of choral music spanning all major periods of music history. An audition is required to participate in this choir. As a Varsity level ensemble, out-of-school performances are common and eligibility (70% in ALL classes) is required for participation.

Chorale

The Chorale is the Varsity level mixed choir, and is made up of members of the Varsity Men’s and Women’s Choruses. The Chorale will perform in 4- to 8-part harmony. This ensemble will be trained at an advanced level in sight-reading and music theory, as well as be exposed to many styles of choral music spanning all major periods of music history. Students must have at least 1 year of experience in vocal music and must pass an entrance audition to participate in the Chorale. As a Varsity level ensemble, out-of-school performances are common and eligibility (70% in ALL classes) is required for participation.

Vocal Jazz

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a select group of varsity-level singers. Vocal Jazz performs 4- to 8- part harmony in Jazz style, which requires advanced levels of sight-reading, harmony, tuning, and vocal control. This ensemble will learn advanced music theory through their work on Jazz repertoire. Students must have at least 1 year of experience in vocal music and must pass an entrance audition to participate in Vocal Jazz. As a Varsity level ensemble, out-of-school performances are common and eligibility (70% in ALL classes) is required for participation.

On top of a concert schedule, members of the Jay VMD participate in the TMEA All-Sate audition process and perform at Solo and Ensemble.
