Welcome to the Vocal Music Department

The vocal music program at John Jay High School provides students the opportunity to perform great music from different times and cultures while learning sight-reading skills, music theory and music history. Learning to sing independently and in a group develops psycho-motor, visual, and aural skills. Students also learn important life skills such as respect, self-confidence, team work, independence and responsibility. Here are some reasons for being a part of John Jay Vocal Music:

• Studies show that students who take vocal music excel better in their studies.
• Vocal music gives you a positive self-image and a feeling of confidence and self-worth.
• Students will develop an understanding, respect, and love for music.
• Vocal students will learn self-discipline, self-control, and a sense of responsibility.
• Best of all, vocal music gives you a "sense of belonging" to a peer group dedicated to excellence throughout their high school years.

Whether you like to sing in the shower or have dreams of singing for the theatre or opera, there is a place for you in the John Jay Vocal Music Department.

-Mr. Flores

The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) sponsors three All-State Choirs-a mixed choir, treble choir, and tenor/bass choir. After a series of auditions, approximately 480 students who qualify will perform at the annual TMEA convention. Students attend rehearsals and culminate the week with a "standing-room-only" performance. The musical experience is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and many colleges offer scholarships to members.

The first level of this competition, Region Tryouts, is a district requirement for all students who desire a varsity letter in vocal music. Solo and Ensemble contest provides students an opportunity to select a song from a prescribed music list, memorize it, and perform it for an appointed judge.

This event is a district requirement for all students who desire a varsity letter in vocal music. In the spring, groups attend the UIL Concert and Sight-reading competition.

There will be a Spring Trip, which will be announced during the first week of school. Students will have the opportunity to raise money for the trip throughout the year.
