Orchestra practice dates

Students who join orchestra are required to attend after school rehearsals and sectionals. These can range from full orchestra rehearsals to just sectionals. Attendance is mandatory and a rehearsal calendar will be accessible very soon.





The calendar in the Orchestra room will be updated weekly with info concerning practice and rehearsal dates! Students will receive a calendar every month with scheduled rehearsals and upcoming events.

Orchestra student requirements

Orchestra students need to have a basic knowledge of orchestra playing and performance, and prospective students should provide their own instrument. However, we have a small quantity of instruments that can be loaned out should the prospective student be unable to provide his/her own instrument.

Non varsity orchestra students need to be able to play the following:
  • 2 octave scales, A, D, G, C, F, B flat, E flat, quarter = 80-90

Varsity orchestra students need to be able to play the following:
  • 3 octave scales, A, D, G, C, F, B flat, E flat, quarter = 75-90
Sight reading skills are essential for varsity orchestra students. Students in the Varsity Orchestra should be able to sight read music at grade level 3.

Prospective students should prepare a short piece to audition for the Jay Orchestra, preferably, the piece they did in their last solo & ensemble.
