The John Jay Orchestra is one of the many fine arts organizations that are associated with John Jay. Our group has steadily developed from a group of 19 students to more than 60 talented orchestra musicians this coming school year (07-08). A great deal of our numbers come from Science Academy students, who make up 1/3 to almost 1/2 of our members, along with a great crop of students who come from Rayburn and Anson Jones Middle School. Orchestra students are taught a regime of fundamental string playing along with intensive performance based lessons. This is a performing orchestra, and as such we expect students to play to their full potential. The Jay Orchestra regularly stages concerts, performs for community engagements, competes at UIL, music festivals, and our students also vie for placement in region and state orchestras. The above mentioned items are just a few of the many things that Jay Orchestra students participate in. Orchestra students are leaders around campus, and as such are held to a higher standard by Mr. Rivera, the entire Fine Arts Dept., and all the school administrators. We welcome any prospective students! Those interested in joining the orchestra should contact Mr. Rivera for an interview. We thank you for visiting our site, and we hope to see you at our concerts.
