| Reading Development I, II, & III |
Reading Development is a two semester course and can
award 1 credit. The purpose of all reading courses offered is to improve
reading by increasing vocabulary, fluency, comprehension abilities
and strategy usage, basic literacy , critical thinking skills, study
skills and performance on standardized tests. Sustained silent reading
is an integral part of high school reading. Students are required
to read daily. Each reading classroom maintains a library of reading
materials, however, students are encouraged to utilize materials from
our well stocked school library, the San Antonio Public Library, and
their personal collections. |
| TAKS Reading |
TAKS Reading is a one semester course and can award
.5 credit. It is offered for students who have failed TAKS Reading
or TAKS English/Language Arts. Instruction is concentrated on acquiring
the skills needed to perform well on TAKS Reading and TAKS English/Language
Arts. |
| Thinking Maps |
Thinking Maps is a visual tool chest that assists learning
through mapping of thinking processes. Eight maps, some of which appear
similar to webs and other graphic organizers, are the engines or paths
that guide students through critical thinking strategies of reading. |
| READ 180 |
READ 180 is an integrated reading program that combines
individual, small group, and whole class directed reading, vocabulary,
and comprehension instruction. Computer assisted instruction is central
to READ 180, however, teachers direct and guide instruction through
individual, small group and whole class instruction. READ 180 supplements
the class library with additional fiction and non fiction titles as
well as a library of audio books. |
