At Jordan Middle School, we implement the NISD comprehensive guidance program. The district rationale is simply stated, "Community influences and societal changes generate identifiable student needs which may not be met solely by classroom curricular programs. However, these students' needs, which are essential to individual growth, can be met by a planned guidance program." In NISD each campus designs its program to meet the District minimum expectations and to meet the special needs of the community it serves. As each school designs its guidance program, the rationale for the local design rests on an assessment of local student and community needs.

The primary function of the three counselors at Jordan is to provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for students in grades 6-8 and specifically provide services to meet the social needs of her assigned caseload; consult with teachers, parents and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students' educational, social, personal and career development; and to provide support to other middle school educational programs.

The major job responsibilities are to teach the middle school guidance curriculum; individual groups, as well as, individual students through the development of educational and career plans; counsel small groups and individual students with problems; consult with teachers, parents and staff regarding the developmental needs of middle school students. Our counselors refer children with problems and their parents to specialists and/or special programs; participate in, coordinate or conduct activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school; plan and evaluate the campus guidance program; and pursue continuous professional growth.

Students may request to see their counselor individually by asking their teacher for permission to go to the counseling office during class time. If a counselor is unavailable, the student may fill out a request form and a counselor will contact the student within 24 hours. A student may drop by the counseling office before school and fill out a request form, and every effort will be made to see the student within the same school day. Parents may contact their child's counselor by telephone or by appointment. Counselors will also be glad to meet with parents on a "drop-in" basis, but there could be a wait if a counselor is occupied. To reach the counseling office call (210) 523-4858 Telephone# or (210) 523-4876 FAX#.
