Homework
Tips
Homework
is used as a means of checking a student's comprehension and
reinforcing
the lessons of the week. For some students and parents homework
is
very difficult to get done and involves a lot of stress and anxiety on
both the student and the parent. Some helpful suggestions to
relieve
some of the stress and anxiety are listed below:
- Try
to have a consistent
time and place for homework to be done
- If
possible
the “ homework
place” should be as free from distractions as possible (No television
or
stereo)
- If
possible
break the
homework into smaller chunks (i.e. 1 page tonight and another tomorrow
night)
- Be
available for questions
and clarifications
- If you
see
your child
becoming frustrated offer reassurance and a break. He/She may
need
to stop and do something else and then come back to it.
- Offer
choices in the
way your child will practice spelling words. (i.e. orally,
bouncing
a ball as they spell their words, clapping each letter as they spell,
writing
them on a paper, chalkboard, dry erase board, sidewalk chalk etc.
Allow variety and it will be more fun)
- Laughter
boosts learning
by reducing stress.
- Ensure
that
you both
have time to do some reading and something fun other than homework that
will motivate both of you.
- Talk to
your child's
teacher about additional suggestions if homework seems to be a weekly
struggle
with your child. Research studies consistently reveal that high
student
achievement and self-esteem are closely related to positive parental
participation
in education. Parents and schools need to work together so
all children can succeed in school.

Grading
Procedures
Numeric
grades are given in reading and math. All other subject areas and
special classes are graded with an E, S, N, or U. A point scale
is
also used for class work. This grading scale is:
4 = Excellent
or 90 – 100
3 = Satisfactory
or 75 – 89
2 = Needs
Improvement or 70 – 74
1 = Unsatisfactory
or 69 or below
Red folders are used to keep you informed daily of your child's
behavior
in school. Yellow folders are for weekly graded work.
