What's
Happening in Second Grade?
At the beginning of the year we are reviewing how to use our singing voice properly as well as recalling the difference between a talking voice and a singing voice. That leads right into learning all about "pitch", which is one of the
Science TEKS for 2nd graders as well!
We are learning what the musical term "pitch" means by are experimenting with high/low pitches.
We are also continuing to compare and contrast musical concepts like: beat/no beat, loud/soft, fast/slow, or smooth/jerky.
Through the songs we learn, we will begin to make conscious the beginning components of reading and writing music. Your child will learn
the quarter note![]()
and quarter rest, which looks like![]()
but we usually just write a "Z".
We will also learn what two eighth notes together look likewhen they occur over a beat.
Watch for your child to start trying to write out "scribble" music.
Just like early language writing , kids need lots of experience with these symbols before they fully understand them. Every music class we practice and reinforce these new concepts.
Or course we always play some singing games, percussion instruments and learn simple dances. What fun!
This is the critical year of understanding the foundation of how music is recorded on paper and read by others. Students will move from just keeping the steady beat to reading rhythms including playing rhythms on instruments!
