Tools to Use in Teaching the Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder

  1. Children respond best with consistent routine.
  2. Utilize visual schedules and/or calendars to explain daily events or to announce a change in the routine.
  3. If your child does not follow your directions or complete a task, break it down into smaller steps.
  4. Label your emotions and his.
  5. Try to approach the problem behaviors in a positive way. Instead of "No hitting" try "Quiet hands."
  6. Teach your child how to communicate - not just to talk. Allow your child to use alternate forms of communication such as pictures, written words, sign language.
  7. When your child starts to get upset, try redirecting to another location or activity
  8. Use simple, concrete language.
  9. What are your child's sensory needs? Investigate ways to ease hyper sensitive and engage hypo sensitive.
  10. Use your child's strengths and interests to teach.
