Tools
to Use in Teaching the Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Children
respond best with consistent routine.
- Utilize
visual schedules and/or calendars to explain daily events or
to announce a change in the routine.
- If your
child does not follow your directions or complete a task, break it down
into smaller steps.
- Label
your emotions and his.
- Try to
approach the problem behaviors in a positive way. Instead of "No
hitting" try "Quiet hands."
- Teach
your child how to communicate - not just to talk. Allow your child to
use alternate forms of communication such as pictures, written words,
sign language.
- When your
child starts to get upset, try redirecting to another location or activity
- Use simple,
concrete language.
- What are
your child's sensory needs? Investigate ways to ease hyper sensitive
and engage hypo sensitive.
- Use your
child's strengths and interests to teach.
