Library Integration Seminars

Interesting, meaningful, authentic experiences for children that relate classroom studies, library resources, research skills, and technology is the goal of NISD's Library Integration Seminars. Research done in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Alaska, and Texas says that librarian/teacher collaboration results in higher student achievement. With this in mind, the plan to encourage and teach librarian/teacher teams to collaborate and create such experiences was developed.

In 2001-2002, technology funds were used to pay librarians who were adept at the concept to facilitate other teams of teachers and librarians to collaborate and develop integrated units that were rich in technology. 106 members on 18 teams representing 14 campuses participated.

In 2002-2003, part of a Telecommunication Infrastructure Funds (TIF) grant funded the seminars. 87 members on 16 teams from 12 campuses participated.

An overview of the resulting collaborative projects is presented below. While these projects were developed for specific campus needs at a particular grade level, units of study could easily be adapted for other grade levels.

In 2004, Northside's Library Integration Seminars will be presented at TCEA in Austin, TX on Friday, February 6, 2004. The next area was added for presentation purposes in February 2004.
