First Grade
HOMEWORK--The most important work your child can do at home is read! Have a time established, about 10-20 minutes a day, for homework. An early routine of scheduling will be beneficial throughout life. The more practice your child gets, the better reader h/she will be. At first you will need to read the book “with” your child the first time h/she reads a book to help with new words. Then work on letting the child read. Praise efforts and don’t ask for perfect reading. One of the hardest things for us, as adults, is to give the child enough time to try to read the word alone. If a child stumbles on the word, ask what makes sense in the sentence. Memorizing a book is one step towards reading. If your child does it, accept it as reading. A handout on “Power Reading” is included in our Orientation packet. Most homework will be assigned on a weekly handout that comes home on Fridays. Turn in homework as it is completed by Fridays. Some homework will not have to be handed in. The weekly assignment sheet will give all instructions that are needed.

MAKEUP WORK—Missed assignments are left on the student’s desk and is allowed to makeup the missed work in a reasonable time depending on the length of the absence.

*These policies are stated in the orientation packet that each parent receives at the first of the year.
