Introduction

The following links come from all over the World Wide Web and represent a variety of facts and ideas about the
International Space Station. You are to complete the following INTERNET ACTIVITIES with your partner(s).  The purpose of this Web page is to give you a sampling of some of the facts, ideas and theories about the International Space Station. Each of the activities asks you to complete a specific task. Read the directions carefully. Use a Word document to record your answers unless you can create a product on some other software. Good luck and have fun!


Internet Activities on the International Space Station


ISS Tour
Scroll down to the third video called "Expedition Five" and click on an appropriate video format for a virtual tour of the Space Station. Write down 3 new facts you learn.

Tour of Zvezda module
Scroll down to the fourth video, description starts "Astronaut Bill Shepard..." and click on an appropriate video format. Write down 3 new facts you learn.


History of the Station (click on the Construction Overview link to the right to see the timeline in a different format)

2.      Create a timeline of the history of the ISS starting with 1984. (use Inspiration or Timeliner for this)

Enter the Station

Activities:

1.      Browse through the ISS modules exhibit by clicking on the pictures.

2.      After browsing the IPIX gallery, list the ISS modules and describe its components and functions. (use Inspiration for this)


Who Does What for the ISS?

Activities:

1.      Within the “Interactives Gallery” click on the various flags to explore and discover what countries contribute to the ISS.

2.      Describe in 2-3 paragraphs what country is the largest contributor to the ISS.  Be sure to explain what this country offers and what benefits it receives for being part of the ISS project.

3.      Create a spreadsheet, in Microsoft Excel, describing each of the remaining countries that contribute to the ISS.  Be sure to include the name of the country, what it offers the space station, and what it receives for being part of the ISS. 



Tracking the Station

Activities:

1.    How far in kilometers does the space station travel above the earth?

2. Describe the approximate current location of the ISS.  Give the longitude, latitude, and name of the country it is nearest to.  Tell if this country is a contributor to the ISS project.

3.      Predict where the ISS will be located in 5 minutes.  Be sure to specify longitude, latitude, and the country it will be nearest to.  Explain your reasoning. 

4.      After 5 minutes, check to see if your prediction was correct.  Explain your outcome.


ISS Construction

Activities:

1.      Navigate the construction timeline. Browse through each year to explore the past, present, and future missions.

2.      What is the name of the first mission to assemble the ISS and what was the launch date?  What was the purpose of this mission?

3.      Using Microsoft Publisher, create a brochure informing the public of the upcoming year’s ISS launch missions and their purpose.

4.      What is the projected year that construction of the ISS will be completed?  What is the name of the last component that will complete the ISS?


Virtual Astronaut

Activities:

1.      Click on “Enter the Station” link and take the 3-D tour of the ISS.

2.     Complete a minimum of 4 activities within the virtual tour.

3.     Name each activity and explain at least 3 things you learned from the activity.


Setting Up A Home In Space

Activities:

1.      Take an animated tour of the ISS in its current configuration.

2.     Explore 3-4 other destinations through this site and explain each one in a short paragraph.  You may include photographs. (for more videos, check out the Video Vault)

3.     Using this information, as well as other information you have previewed from other websites, construct a model of the ISS using your imagination. (Click here for an example)


Test Yourself

Activities:

1.      Search the website by clicking on the various links.  Be sure to go to the Surprising Facts page! Form an outline summarizing information you find regarding the ISS. (you can use Inspiration for this)

2.      Click on the “Quiz Yourself” link and take the ISS quiz.  Summarize the correct questions and answers in a paragraph.


Conclusion

You have had the opportunity to explore countless information about the International Space Station. Reflect on what you have learned and write about something that most interested you.  In your reflection state your opinion about this lesson… (Did you like it?  Would you recommend these sites and activities to a friend?).
