MISSION 1
LESSON PLAN
Project Name: Getting Ready for Liftoff!
Subject Area: Reading, Science, Math
Timeline: 2-3 class periods
Grade Level: 5th and up

Students should have a basic understanding of
Inspiration and how to navigate the Internet.
Procedures:
-
Students are to answer the various questions using the
links listed under resources. The links are not in any particular order, so
the students must search the sites to find the information. Students will use
their Journal Log to record notes and information.

After they have answered all the questions in their
journal log they will organize their notes and incorporate finding into their
final presentation. To help the students with their organization instruct them
to use the following terms as the titles of their Inspiration web
branches:
GRAVITY | FOOD | WATER | CLOTHS | EXERCISE.
Extension Activities :Mini Lesson
Title: Water on the I.S.S.
Procedures:
-
Review with students what they have learned about living
in space.
-
Discuss with student the importance of water conservation
on the space station.

Instruct students to click on the water conservation link.
-
Go over the directions of the lesson with the students.
This is a teacher lead activity.

Complete the hands on activity in groups or as a whole
class.

Title
: Tracking the I.S.S.
Procedures:
-
Discuss and review the definitions of longitude, latitude,
and altitude.
-
Inform students that they will be required to keep track
of these three areas through out their mission.

Go to Station Location link as a class.
-
Talk about the different parts of this site and where they
will be able to find the information they will need to complete this ongoing
activity.
-
As students complete each mission they will use the
Station Location sheet to record longitude, latitude, and altitude, date, and
location of the station over the earth.

As soon as a team completes a mission they must add new
data to the Station completing missions 1-5 students will average out all the
data and record it in the appropriate column.
Assessment:
Rubric will be used to assess students completed
work.
Observation by teacher
Web will be turned in along with other projects after Mission 6 is
completed.

MISSION 2
LESSON PLAN
Project Name: ISS MODULES
Subject Area: Language Arts & Science
Timeline: 2-3 Class periods
Grade Level: 5th and up

Students should have a basic understanding of Inspiration and how to
navigate the Internet.
Procedures:

Review the directions of Mission 2 with the students.
Inform students that they will be investigating the various modules of the
International Space Station and researching names, functions, and components
of each module.

Explain to students that when using the links provided for
this mission, they need to find information that will answer the questions
listed below.
a. What are the names of the ISS modules?
b. What are the functions of
the individual modules?
c. What components make up each module?
d. What
information from these sites can I use in my final mission (persuading other
countries to join the ISS team)?

Students should use their Journal Logs to take
notes.

Students will use their notes to create a web using
Inspiration. The branches of the web should correlate to the questions listed
in procedure 2.

Students will save and print their Inspiration web, to be
used as a guide when creating their PowerPoint presentation in Mission 6.
-
Remind the teams that the Mission Control and Data Control
Specialist's need to make sure the group has researched and recorded all the
necessary information. Remind them to reread the directions and follow the
mission rubric.
Rubric will be used to assess students completed work.
Web will be turned in along with other projects after
Mission 6 is completed.

MISSION 3
LESSON PLAN
Project Name: Who Does What on the I.S.S.?
Subject Area: Reading, Social Studies,
Timeline: 2-3 class periods
Grade Level: 5th and up
TEKS
Students will:
Language Arts
Use word processing to summarize information
Compare and Contrast skills will be utilized
Social Studies
Will learn and appreciate differences between countries, cultures, and
languages.
Content Area Objective:
· Students will use their research
skills to locate information and learn various facts about the countries
involved in the construction of the ISS.
· Students will learn countries
names, what hemisphere they are in, their populations, languages, and flags.
· Students will use the writing process to produce a two to three paragraph
summary.
Technology Objective:
· Students will create a table in
Microsoft Word, enabling them to organizing information about countries
contributing to the I.S.S.

Procedures:
Activity One
Students will investigate each country involved in the construction of the
ISS.
They will use the Who Does What on the ISS and
International Partners sites to find the information.
Students will record each countries contributions to the space station in
their journal log.
Students will create a table using Microsoft Word following the example
below.

Project Name: WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE ISS?

Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of
the purpose of the International Space Station by reading and deciphering data
from various websites.

Students will be able to accurately summarize information
relating to the ISS and create a one- page report based on their
research.
Technology Objectives:
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the Internet by navigating various
websites relating to the components of the ISS.
Students will demonstrate
knowledge of Microsoft Word by creating a one- page report summarizing
information related to the purpose of ISS, scientific experiments, and
extravehicular activities on the ISS.

Students should have prior knowledge of Microsoft Word before completing this
activity.

Discuss with students the purpose of Mission 4 (navigating
components of the ISS and learning about the ongoing research, experiments,
and EVA's currently at work).

Explain to students that, using the links provided for
this mission, each group will need to research the following questions while
they are navigating the websites.
a. What is the purpose of the ISS? Why would a country want to contribute
to its construction and research?
b. What scientific experiments are taking
place on the ISS?
c. What is the purpose of EVA's and how do they help with
the ongoing research that is taking place?
- As a class, enter the Virtual Astronaut site,
http://www.virtualastronaut.jsc.gov/.
- Explain to students that they must take the virtual tour of the ISS and
explore the variety of activities within this site.
- Tell the students that they must search and complete the activity related
to scientific research (plants). Note: There are many activities in this
virtual site, so it may be useful to tell students to complete at least 4
others before leaving.
- After exploring the Virtual Astronaut site, allow students time to
navigate the other links provided and take any needed notes as they find
answers to the questions.
- Using any notes the students may have taken, they will then create a
report in Microsoft Word summarizing the information and answers that they
have found. The report must be in 12 pt font, double spaced, and written with
correct grammar and spelling.
- Students will save and print their report. This will be used as a guide
when creating their PowerPoint presentation in Mission 6.
Assessment:
Students will be evaluated on a correctly
complete report in Microsoft Word. See rubric for details.
The report will be turned in and graded as part of the final Mission 6
presentation.
MISSION 5
LESSON PLAN
Project Name: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE ISS?
Subject Area: Social Studies, Language Arts, Reading, and Science
Timeline: 2-3 class periods
Grade Level: 5th and up

(finding information on the future plans and projects of the ISS).

Remind students to make sure they are keeping in mind
their final mission (persuading other countries to join the ISS team).

Using the links provided, students will explore the
construction timeline of the ISS and focus on finding information regarding
future endeavors for the ISS.

Using the information researched, students will create a
timeline using poster board.. The timeline must include dates and descriptions
of important facts leading to the completion of the ISS.

Students must also include two ideas that they would like
to see as a part of the ISS construction i.e. research experiments or
extravehicular activities.
-
Students will take a digital picture of their their time
line and incorporate it into their final PowerPoint
presentation.
Assessment:
Students will be evaluated on an accurately
completed timeline. See rubric for more details. The web will be turned in and
graded with the final Mission 6 presentation.

MISSION 6
LESSON PLAN
Project Name: Invest in I.S.S.
Subject Area: Social Studies, Language Arts, Reading, and Science, Technology

Completed activities from Mission 1-5
Procedures:
- Students will need to gather all their resources, completed activities,
images, and rubrics before beginning this final mission.
- Inform students that they will be creating a PowerPoint presentation that
will summarize each of their missions and persuade potential investors to
become part of the I.S.S. team.
- As a class, read through the MISSION 6 rubric and discuss in detail.
- Explain to students that the table listed under MISSION 6 is simply a
guide in setting up their slideshow. THIS IS NOT THE RUBRIC!
- As a class, review the definition of persuasion and brainstorm strategies
that can accomplish this task.
- Remind students that they are required to have 2-3 slides summarizing each
of their missions and a conclusion slide that gives their final persuasive
statements. (see table)
- When students complete this mission, they will need to present their
slideshow to the class and turn in all completed mission activities (Missions
1-5).
Assessment:
Students will be evaluated based on the final MISSION 6 rubric and on the
completion of each individual activity in missions 1-5.
