Background Information

The Life in Space web site from Discovery.com is filled with timelines and virtual tours providing you with a plethora of information. The student version, Space-Age Living: Building the International Space Station, is more suitable for most children. The Human Space Flight Gallery includes video clips and images of the International Space Station. At spaceKids.com, students will view a color-coded, cliable diagram of the ISS. Each color represents a country. By clicking a color, students learn various facts about what that country contributed to the ISS.

Lesson Ideas

Students who are working to improve their persuasive writing can create a flyer using Publisher (pdf format) after researching with the sites listed above. They may want to write about:

Using the Subject Samplers or the WebQuest provided on the main page are also excellent resources for having students learn the various components of the ISS.

Students could use Inspiration to create an informative diagram of the different components of the ISS. They should have a category for Missions where they can list the dates and names of the major missions (they can even include what made those missions special), a category for Astronauts where they can list the astronauts who have lived aboard the ISS, a category for Countries where they could list the different countries that are contributing to the ISS (and what they are contributing), and a category for Science where they can list the major areas of science experiments that are taking place on the ISS (and list some current experiments). The resources for this lesson would be the sites listed on the main page.
