Procedure

Step 1
As a whole class, compare a colonist resettlement to the resettlement you have had in your own family, for example in a move to another city or new school or even new grade. Your teacher will record your responses in a Venn Diagram on the computer, projected for the whole class to see.

Step 2
Using the following vocabulary, create a criss-cross puzzle at Puzzlemaker.com to exchange with another classmate. Define any vocabulary that is unfamiliar using your textbook, classroom lecture notes, or online resources found at Ivy's Dictionaries for Kids.

Vocabulary Words: banish, bay, charter, climate, compact, geography, gulf, indentured servant, lake, landform, mountain, ocean, peninsula, Pilgrim, region, religious freedom, river, tolerate, vegetation.

Step 3
You will now be assigned a colonial region to research. Use the Internet Resources from this Web page, library resources, and your textbook to gather information on your colonial region. Your research should have you answering the following questions:

Use a separate piece of notebook paper for each question. At the bottom of each sheet, record your sources (where you found the information) so as to give credit to them on your brochure. You can use the Citation Machine to copy and paste correct citations.

Step 4
Complete the first five steps of the Big Six research strategy before beginning your project. You will record your answers to the following questions in an Inspiration web, or on a printed version of the online form.

Step 5
Decide which information presents the most positive features of your region and write at least five summaries to include in your brochure.

Step 6
Design a detailed, color map of your region that includes the following:

Step 7
Design your brochure. You will use persuasive writing, include at least ten vocabulary words, scan in your self designed map of the region, include images/clip art to enhance the design, include at least five of your information summaries, and give credit to your information and image sources.

Step 8
Complete step six of the Big Six (how will I know if I did well?). Proofread and self-assess your brochure using the rubric. Also, have a classmate do the same and provide feedback about your project. Based on your feedback, revise your brochure. Complete section six of the printed online Big Six form if you used it in the beginning.

Step 9
Present the information contained in your brochure to your class in the format of your choosing (dramatic, report, poetic, etc.). Don't forget about using a clear, loud voice and maintain eye contact with your audience.
