About Our Library

McDermott Elementary School
Northside Independent Schools

5111 USAA Boulevard
San Antonio, Texas

Our library is staffed by Cindy Beard, Librarian, and Mary Ann Crisp, Library Assistant. The library is open from 7:10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. every day except Mondays. The library is utilized for meetings and staff development every Monday afternoon. Our collection includes books, magazines, videos and a growing bilingual section. Students come both weekly with their class and individually to select books.

Our ongoing goals are to integrate library skills with classroom curriculum, improve students' reading abilities, and instill a life-long love of reading. Students utilize the library resources in order to enhance classroom instruction.

We use Accelerated Reader, a computer-based reading motivation program. This is an easy-to-use computer-based tool that inspires students to read more and better books. The students earn "points" for each test passed. These "points" are saved and spent at an "AR Store" every nine weeks. These prizes help to motivate our readers.

Several times a year McDermott Elementary has a "Library Night". Parents are encouraged to visit our library with their child. Library Night is held from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on the designated nights. Children listen to stories and families may check out five library books to enjoy at home.
