Welcome Myers Eagles to the wonderful world of the Internet! On this website you will learn some
very important skills 1. Internet Explorer is
the program, which allows you to open the Internet from your computer.
We use Internet
Explorer at Myers. It is called a web browser. Its icon looks like
a blue e on your computer's desktop. If you double-click on it, it
will take you to the Northside home page on the Internet. The home
page is the first page of a web site. 2. There are millions of different Internet sites on the World Wide Web (WWW). Each site has its own address. If you were writing a report about dogs and didn't know the Internet address for any dog web sites, how would you go about finding the information? Answer: You would use a kid safe search engine! Search engines allow you to type in key words to search for specific topics. If you type in the word dog, it will list hundreds of web sites which contain the word dog. That would be too many sites to use! Instead, you could use a "+" plus sign to include two or more words in your search, for example (dog + diet). This will give you less sites, which will save you time! Let's try both ways by visiting a popular kid safe search engine, Yahooligans. Compare the number of hits for each. Click the Back button to return to this page. 3. If you use someone else's words, or ideas, or pictures off the Internet, you need to give them credit for their work in your bibiliography or credits page. Here is how you should cite your sources at the end of a paper, PowerPoint, or web page! Let's practice citing a source together. Then, click on the Back button to get back to this page. Scroll down to look at how I have cited my sources at the bottom of this page! 4. Have you ever seen an advertisement pop up on a web page? Have you heard about chat rooms? If so, you need to learn about some of the dangerous waters on the web! Be sure to click on the personal information link at the bottom of the page. Click the Back button to return to this page. 5. Here are some more Kid's Rules for Online Safety. When you are done, click the Back button to return to this page. 6. Finally, we need to learn about the rules and consequences for using the Internet by reading the Acceptable Use Policy.
Thanks for surfing with me.
