PLACEMENT GUIDELINES FOR SECONDARY AEPs

I. Term of Placement - The standard term of placement shall be for thirty (30) successful days.

A successful day is defined as one in which the student...

  • is present and on time;
  • is on task and engaged in learning; and
  • exhibits acceptable behavior, including compliance with the dress code.
  •

The administrators of the secondary AEPs will develop specific criteria for the items listed above for approval by the Deputy Superintendent.

In certain instances, e.g., a Title 5 felony, the term of placement shall be individually determined and may be for a longer duration.

Short Term Placement - A student who violates the discipline policy may be assigned to the AEP for a term of fifteen (15) successful days if the student's discipline record is minimal, with no major infractions. Also, the nature of the current offense and/or the extent of the student's involvement in it are minimal.

II. Extension of Term - A student's assignment to the AEP shall be extended for unsuccessful days at a ratio of 1:1 for both fifteen-day and thirty-day placements. Excused absences are also made-up using the 1:1 ratio.

On the fourth unsuccessful day of a fifteen-day assignment, the term will convert to a thirty-day placement. Credit will be given for successful days completed.

Beginning with the fifth unsuccessful day of a thirty-day assignment, expulsion may be considered based on continued persistent misbehavior. On the tenth unsuccessful day, a discipline file review should be conducted with Pupil Personnel to determine if an expulsion hearing is appropriate.

The last three (3) days of a fifteen-day assignment must be successful in order to return to the regular campus.

The last five (5) days of a thirty-day assignment must be successful in order to return to the regular campus. Some variations may occur based on individual student circumstances.

III. Transition to Regular Campus - Each regular campus shall implement a transition plan for each student returning from placement in an AEP. The transition plan shall include:

The AEP shall be responsible for contacting the regular campus to coordinate the student's reentry. When students are released at the end of the school year, the letter to parents shall include specific directions and information concerning the need to contact the school immediately to arrange the reentry conference and register for the next school year.

IV. Enrollment and Attendance Accounting - When a student is assigned to a secondary AEP, he/she is withdrawn from the home school and enrolled at the AEP. Attendance is maintained by the AEP for both fifteen and thirty-day assignments.

V. Grading and Instruction - Teachers will be notified when one of their students is placed in an AEP. Regular campus teachers are not expected to send assignments. But teachers may send special assignments/instructions for the students via pony, fax, or e-mail. The regular campus teacher should assign a "grade to date"on the withdrawal form, otherwise the AEP will assign a grade equal to the grade earned at the AEP. Generally, responsibility for grades will rest with the teachers at the AEP.

If a teacher wants a student to complete a specific assignment, project, or test after returning to the regular campus, a reasonable amount of time shall be given to the student to make up the work or to prepare for the test.

All students will be assigned grades in all courses during their placement at the AEP.

VI. Dress Code - Uniforms are required at the AEP, including students on fifteen-day assignments. Loaners will be available on a case by case, as needed basis.

VII. Schedule - The Alternative High School will operate with a split schedule.

A. The morning session will begin at 7:10 a.m. and end at 2:40 p.m. for students from Holmes, Jay, Stevens and Warren students. (Subject to change for balancing)

B. The second session begins at 8:25 and ends at 3:35 for students from Clark, Marshall, O'Connor, and Taft students. (Subject to change for balancing)
