Safeline enters its fifth year of keeping kids safe

On March 23, 2001, the Northside ISD launched Safeline, a proactive telephone hotline designed to increase safety at Northside Schools. Now entering its fifth year, the system continues to be an integral part, along with the new video surveillance equipment installed at the high schools this past year, to enhance the safety and security efforts of our students and employees.

Since its inception, Safeline has averaged about twenty calls per month, many coming from parents who wish to report incidents or potential problems told to them by their children. The goals are preventative; the police department wants to stop problems before they happen and uses tips from Safeline to help make Northside schools safer environments.

Chief of Northside Police John Page described Safeline as part of an overall program to reduce problems in schools and promote safety. It is promoted to encourage use beyond that of a conventional crimestopper system. “It has been very successful with students, citizens and parents in the community…we urge them to keep it up.”

The Northside Police Department keeps the momentum going for the program all year. Officers always take Safeline magnets and bookmarks and distribute Safeline information when they go into the field to make presentations at schools or go into neighborhoods. It is important to keep the public interested in the program and the Police department works with the schools and departments to make sure Safeline continues to help improve the safety and confidence in the District.

The system is an anonymous voicemail system that is monitored and managed by the Northside ISD Police department. Operated seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, the system addresses reports of crime, violations of district policy, and safety concerns. It is completely anonymous and does not use any caller I.D. devices, although persons calling are encouraged to leave their names and telephone numbers in case additional information is needed.

Anyone seeing suspicious activity around a school or know of a potential safety hazard, should call 397-SAFE (7233). Safety in Northside ISD is everyone’s responsibility!
