The Northside ISD Citizens’ Bond Committee, a group of almost 200 parents, community and business leaders, will begin meeting this week to make recommendations on how Northside can best meet the needs of its exploding student enrollment.

A bond issue to build new schools and expand and renovate existing schools is planned for May 2007, but will not move forward without input from the Citizens’ Bond Committee and approval from the Board of Trustees.

Members of the Citizens’ Bond Committee will be charged with developing the proposal that eventually will be presented to the Board. The committee is scheduled to meet from 7 to 9 p.m. every Monday through Dec. 11 at the Northside Activity Center, 7001 Culebra Road.

“The growth in Northside is phenomenal, and we simply do not have enough classrooms in our schools for all the children that are entering our District every year,” Superintendent John Folks said. “We’ve got to have more space for our students, and this committee will play a vital role in the development of a plan to tackle the growth.”

District enrollment, now at almost 82,000, and is growing by almost 4,000 students a year and is expected to hit 100,000 within the next five years.

Throughout the bond committee process, members will hear from staff members about enrollment projections, the financial impact of a bond issue, needs of existing schools and facilities, among other topics.

A list of members serving on the Citizens’ Bond Committee will be available Monday, Oct. 30, on the same day the official web site for School Bond 2007 will be launched.
