There are 1,037 school districts in Texas, and more than 5,000 campus administrators are members of the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.
“To have not one but two of our campus administrators be named the best in the state is phenomenal,” Northside Superintendent John Folks said. “Like all of our principals, both of these educators are on the front lines every day working to support students and making sure they’re reaching their potential.”
Jones Middle School, a school with a diverse socio-economic enrollment, has earned a Recognized rating from the Texas Education Agency the last two years and was one of the first campuses in the state to receive a Governor’s Educators Excellence Award grant.
“We work hard to make sure our students know we believe in them and that we want to see them succeed,” said Foerster, who has been principal at Jones Middle School since 2004. “In order to accomplish this, our teaching staff works and plans hard to do what is in the best interest of ‘our’ kids, and we won’t give up until we find ways to help them learn.”
The school’s No. 1 goal is to maintain its Recognized status and work toward becoming an Exemplary campus, she said.
Fields, who helped open Stevens High School last year, became an educator after a 20-year career in the Air Force. Like Foerster, he said his achievement is a tribute to all StevensHigh School teachers and administrators, who all focus on building relationships with students. Fields said he sets high expectations for students and strives to be a role model for them.
“I try to live the way I would want the students to live and to be the example I want them to be, and hold them to that standard,” he said.
Both Foerster and Fields will be recognized during the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals summer workshop in June at the Austin Convention Center. Before advancing to the state competition, they each were named winners for Region 20, which includes 51 school districts in 15 counties in South Central Texas. Krista Garcia, assistant principal at Neff Middle School, also was a Region 20 winner.
