Communications Arts among top 100 high schools in U.S.
Health Careers, Clark, and Jay also make the grade in Newsweek ranking

Communications Arts High School once again has made Newsweek magazine’s list of the top 100 best public high schools in America.

Health Careers, Clark, and Jay high schools also made the list of “America’s Best High Schools,” ranking at No. 408, No. 833, and No. 1,253 respectively. Communications Arts was ranked at No. 100.

“This is a wonderful celebration of these schools’ efforts to prepare successful students,” Superintendent John Folks said. “I’m thrilled they’re getting recognition for their hard work.”

The top 100 schools are listed in the May 28th edition of the Newsweek. Communications Arts was the only high school in San Antonio to make the top 100.

On its web site, Newsweek ranked a total of 1,257 high schools, which represent the top 5 percent of the nation’s 27,000 public high schools, according to the magazine.

The magazine ranked high schools by taking the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests given in May 2006 and divided that by the number of graduating seniors. All schools that achieved a ratio of at least 1.000 – which means there were an equal number of graduates and tests given – are listed on the Newsweek web site.

“Test scores, the usual way of rating schools, are in nearly every case a measure of parental wealth and education, not good teaching,” Jay Mathews, Newsweek contributing editor, wrote in an article about the rankings. “I developed a scale … which used each school’s rate of participation in college-level tests like AP to indicate which schools were the most demanding and supportive of all students.”

Principals leading Northside’s top-ranked schools are James Buchanan, Communications Arts; Jackie Horras, Health Careers; Stan Laing, Clark; and Gerardo Marquez, Jay.
