This year’s class of Leadership Northside is underway.
Members of the class – who include business and community leaders – meet at monthly breakfast meetings over an eight-month period to learn about the operations and dynamics of Bexar County’s largest school district.
They’ll hear from staff members about finance, facilities, technology, instruction, and other areas, and learn what it takes to run a District of more than 82,000 students and 11,000 employees.
“It’s a way to get business people more aware of the challenges we face and more familiar with what we’re trying to accomplish,” Superintendent John Folks said.
“It’s a great education tool.”
The program is coordinated by the School-Business-Community Partnerships Department.
Shantel Wilkins of The Boeing Co., said her company, already a partner with Northside, wants to invest in the community and is always on the lookout for volunteer opportunities.
“I hope the result is a better-educated business community,” she said of Leadership Northside. “The school district is our main resource for a future workforce.”
Leadership Northside is a mutually beneficial program, participants said.
“It helps us, knowing what’s going on in the schools,” said Deborah Condon, membership services manager for the Girl Scouts of San Antonio. “It’s a lot of fun meeting and networking with all the other community leaders and finding out how we can support Northside in the future and all of its growth.”
