The Board of Trustees Tuesday night selected Robert L. Vale, a former state senator and representative, to serve as the namesake for Northside’s 16th middle school.

Robert L. Vale Middle School, formerly referred to as “Potranco North area” Middle School, is located at 2120 N. Ellison Dr., about a mile north of Stevens High School and is currently under construction.

A member of the Texas Legislature for 20 years, Vale was a tireless advocate for better opportunities and facilities for school children, higher wages and benefits for teachers, and higher standards for public education. The Korean War veteran was consistently recognized by the Texas State Teachers Association for his support of public education.

Locally, Vale’s four children attended Northside schools, and he was an active participant in the PTAs of his children’s schools. He died in 1992 at the age of 60.

Northside traditionally names middle schools after Texas governors or state leaders who have made significant contributions to education. Members of the public nominate namesake candidates and Board members make the final selection.

Vale Middle School is being built with funds from School Bond 2004 and will relieve overcrowding at Jordan and Luna middle schools. It will be one of five schools that will open in the summer of 2008, along with Brandeis High School, and Carnahan, Forester, and Scarborough elementary schools.
