Three Northside schools earned Exemplary status this year, including Health Careers High School, making it one of only 20 high schools in the state to earn the top rating from the Texas Education Agency.
Helotes Elementary School and Leon Springs Elementary School also earned an Exemplary rating. Earlier this week, the TEA released the ratings, which are based on students’ scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).
In addition to the three Exemplary schools, Northside also has 37 Recognized schools and 40 Academically Acceptable Schools. No schools were deemed Academically Unacceptable. Here’s a
complete list of Northside campuses and their ratings.
The District overall was rated Academically Acceptable.
"I feel very good with how our schools fared this year," Superintendent Dr. John Folks said. "Across the District, we saw performance gains in every curriculum area that is subject to accountability."
In addition, NISD students scored higher than the state average at every grade level and subject area.
Last year, the District was rated Recognized and had a higher number of Exemplary and Recognized schools. The reason for the decrease in Recognized schools is because the standards were raised this year.
Last year, to achieve a Recognized rating, 70 percent of the total student body and each of the student groups – white, Hispanic, African American, and economically disadvantaged – had to pass the TAKS in all subject areas. This year, the passing standard rose to 75 percent.
Because of the higher standard, statewide, the number of Recognized campuses dropped and the number of Academically Acceptable campuses rose.
