Two Northside ISD high schools will host “Student Aid Saturdays” in April to help students and parents apply for college financial aid. The events are free and open to all students from all NISD high schools. Parents and students are encouraged to attend.
One-on-one assistance will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. both at Clark High School on Saturday, April 6, and at Jay High School on Saturday, April 27.
The Student Aid Saturdays San Antonio (SASSA) initiative offers free one-on-one help to students and parents completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) forms for college financial aid. Trained financial aid experts offer assistance in English and Spanish, as well as information on scholarship applications.
“Filling out financial aid forms is one of the strongest indicators that a high school senior will enroll in college, yet fewer than half of San Antonio students fill out these forms,” said Dr. Deborah Healy, Director of Guidance and Counseling. “The services offered at Student Aid Saturdays are so important for both students and their families. I hope our Northside community takes advantage of this free opportunity.”
In order to receive any type of funding, students must complete a financial aid application. Financial aid is awarded on a first-come first-served basis beginning January 1, 2013.
“The sooner students apply for financial aid, the more money they are likely to receive. Every year, aid-eligible students who think they might not qualify miss out on financial aid by simply not applying,” said Dr. Healy.
Student Aid Saturdays is a joint effort by the City of San Antonio, Firstmark Credit Union, SA2020, San Antonio Education Partnership, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, and Generation TX San Antonio.
