November 5, 2008
Have a favorite teacher or principal that you'd like to nominate for an award?

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2009 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. Created in 2002, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards are designed to honor outstanding public school professionals and to thank them for their dedication and commitment. Through this program, H-E-B seeks to pay tribute to those educators who go the extra mile each day.

The deadline for the teaching and principal nominations is Friday, Nov. 21, with the deadline for the school district nominations on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009.

For the first time in the awards eight-year history, nominations for the teaching awards will be accepted online. Nomination forms can also be picked up at any H-E-B store. Parents, students and colleagues are strongly encouraged to nominate their favorite teacher, principal or school district. Self-nominations are also welcome.

The Teaching Awards fall into three categories: Rising Star, for those with less than 10 years of classroom experience; Leadership, for those with 10-20 years of classroom experience; and Lifetime Achievement, for those with more than 20 years of classroom experience.

The Principal Awards are granted to one elementary principal and one secondary principal. The School District awards go to one large school district (4A or 5A) and one small district (1A, 2A or 3A).

The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program was launched in 2002 as a strong way to support public education in Texas. It is a personal initiative of H-E-B CEO and Chairman, Charles Butt, who implemented the program to highlight the outstanding practices of Texas public schools and spotlight and celebrate the work of Texas educators. Since its inception, the program has handed out more than $3 million to 773 educators and 155 schools and districts across the state.
