Three Northside ISD math teachers have been named recipients of the San Antonio Mayoral/County Judge Outstanding Science and Mathematics Teaching Award.

The award winners and excerpts from their nominations are:
Cristina McGowen, fifth grade teacher, Powell Elementary School Years of teaching experience: 1.5 According to Powell Vice Principal Lisa Hibshman: "Ms. McGowen has helped our Title I students bridge the gap between socio-economic levels by developing and implementing math lessons that are both challenging and relevant. Her math lessons spark interest in the area of mathematics."
Daniel Applegate, eighth grade math teacher, Rayburn Middle School Years of teaching experience: 4 According to former Rayburn Principal Eric Tobias: "He demonstrates the most effective teaching practices throughout his lessons for the students and during staff development for our faculty.... Daniel's leadership and drive energizes our campus and his commitment to excellence creates a higher standard for others to achieve."
Brandon Grell, 10th grade geometry teacher, Warren High School Years of teaching experience: 7 months According to Warren Principal Patty Hill: "He is a first year teacher but it is difficult to tell due to his amazing capacity to build rapport with his students, provide differentiated instruction, his knowledge of his subject matter and his expert use of technology in the classroom."
This is the second year for the award, which is coordinated by the University of Texas at San Antonio and funded by H-E-B Grocery Co., USAA Education Foundation, and McCombs Foundation.
The award was established to honor quality math and science teachers who help to increase the number of students who choose careers in these fields.
