Business Careers High School

Prinzezz H. Lopez, this year's valedictorian at Business Careers High School, plans to attend the University of the Incarnate Word majoring in computer graphic arts. The daughter of Arturo and Sylvia Lopez, she is the recipient of the Alamo Bowl Scholarship. While in school, she was vice president of Mu Alpha Theta, anchor of the school's news broadcast, and yearbook photographer and layout designer.

"I want to thank my family for encouraging me to do my best," she said. "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be where I am today."

James Hestilow is the Business Careers High School salutatorian. This fall, he plans to attend Rice University majoring in economics. The son of Kristin Grayson and Gary Hestilow, he was a member of the Holmes basketball team, National Honor Society, and English Honor Society.

The commencement ceremonies for Business Careers High School will be held Wednesday, June 10 at 4 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Communications Arts High School

Nathan Schuetz is the Communications Arts High School valedictorian. This fall, he plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin majoring in mathematics. The son of Randy Schuetz and Susan Schuetz, he is the recipient of the UT Austin Cockrell School of Engineering scholarship, Midland UIL academic meet scholarship, among others. While in school, he was the junior class treasurer, Academic Decathlon team captain, Junior Engineering & Technological Society president, Science Club treasurer, and Science Bowl team captain.

"I'd like to thank my parents for everything they've helped me through, and am looking forward to studying mathematics and related subjects in college and beyond," he said.

Javier Flores, this year's salutatorian at Communications Arts High School, plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station majoring in computer science. The son of Jesus and Geraldine Flores, he received the Lechner scholarship and Century Scholar scholarship, both from Texas A&M, among others.

"I'd like to thank my parents for standing by and pushing the importance of education," he said. "Also, a thank you to the faculty and staff for providing me with this educational opportunity and doing their best to give me an excellent high school experience."

The commencement ceremonies for Communications Arts High School will be held Friday, June 12 at 4 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Clark High School

Robert Aron Rubin, this year's valedictorian at Clark High School, plans to attend the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in finance. The son of Jay and Jeanne Rubin, he is the recipient of the Northwest Rotary Club of San Antonio Foundation scholarship, among others. While in school, he was the class president, Interact Club treasurer, and Boys State representative. He is also an Eagle Scout.

"Thanks to my loving family for supporting me," he said.

Joseph Lee is the Clark High School salutatorian. This fall, he plans to attend The Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University in Durham, N.C. majoring in biomedical engineering. The son of Yi-Der Lee and Huey-Jen Lee, he is the recipient the Texas Society of Professional Engineers Scholarship, among others. While in school, he served as president of the Math UIL, Interact co-president, and Interact junior and sophomore representative.

"I would like to thank my family for guiding me to become who I am without controlling me," he said.

The commencement ceremonies for Clark High School will be held Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Health Careers High School

Lauren Marie Zook, this year's valedictorian at Health Careers High School, plans to attend Rice University in Houston majoring in English. The daughter of Brian and Holly Zook, she is the recipient of the Texas State Junior Classical League Student of the Year scholarship, National Merit scholarship, and Rice Trustee scholarship, among others. While in school, she was involved with the Latin Club and served as Chamber Choir Assistant Student Director.

"I would like to thank my parents for always providing an environment where questions were encouraged, and my Latin teacher for teaching me that nothing we learn in school is useless in real life," she said.

Andrew Erminio Previc is this year's salutatorian at Health Careers High School. This fall, he plans to attend the University of Texas at Dallas majoring in economics. The son of Fred Previc and Nancy Amodei, he is the recipient of the Eugene McDermott scholarship, and Texas Instruments Scholar award. While in school, he was the president of the Spanish Honor Society, State Delegate for Texas Boy's State, and a Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 27.

"I would like to thank my teachers, friends, and family for their constant support these past four years," he said.

The commencement ceremonies for Health Careers High School will be held Friday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Paul Taylor Field House.

Holmes High School

Natalie Perez is this year's valedictorian at Holmes High School. The daughter of Daniel Perez and Elda Perez, she is the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation scholarship, University of Incarnate Word Presidential Schoalrship, All-Link scholarship, Hays R. Warden Memorial Endowed scholarship, and Terry Foundation scholarship. While in school, she served as editor of the school yearbook, historian of the National Honor Society, and member of the National English Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Texas Technology Students Association.

"I really don't know what to expect in the future, but I can only hope that I enjoy it," she said. "I would like to thank my mom and dad for loving me, and all my other family, friends and teachers for keeping my feet on the ground."

Adam Brow is the Holmes High School salutatorian. This fall, he plans to attend UTSA majoring in information systems. The son of Daniel and Cynthia Brown, he served as vice president of the Kitty Hawk Air Society and commander, as well as academics officer while in school.

"I would like to give special thanks to my parents, because of their support for education which put me in this place, he said. "I'd also like to thank all my teachers for their guiding hands."

Jay High School

Deborah Tamez, this year's valedictorian at Jay High School, hopes to go to college and major in nursing. She is the daughter of Maria D. Tamez and Orlando Tamez.

Michelle Valdez is the Jay High School salutatorian, and is a junior graduating with the senior class. This fall, she plans to attend St. Mary's University majoring in forensic science. The daughter of Crystal Haywood, she was active in many school activities including serving as the yearbook chief sports photographer, and president of the environmental club.

The commencement ceremonies for Jay High School will be held Friday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.

John Jay Science and Engineering Academy

Alyssha J. Rodriguez, this year's valedictorian at the John Jay Science and Engineering Academy, plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin majoring in accounting. The daughter of Rosie Rodriguez, she served as senior class president, varsity volleyball captain, National Honor Society vice president and treasurer, and an instructor with the Golden Dragon Karate Studio.

"Thanks to my parents and sister for always pushing me," she said. "There are no short cuts to anywhere worth going in life."

Meagan A. Gonzales is the John Jay Science and Engineering Academy salutatorian. This fall, she plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station majoring in biomedical sciences. The daughter of Reuben and Sandra Gonzales, she is the recipient of the Capital Group scholarship, St. Mary's University scholarship, Texas A&M Academic Achievement scholarship, among others. While in school, she served as National Honor Society secretary, VOICE (animal club) secretary and event ideas coordinator, Mu Alpha Theta member, National English Honor Society member, and a member of the Jay HS Marching Band.

The commencement ceremonies for John Jay Science and Engineering Academy will be held Friday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Marshall High School

Jon Gonzales is the Marshall High School valedictorian. This fall, he plans to attend Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. majoring in chemical engineering and economics. The son of Ruben Gonzales and Griselda Gonzales, he is the recipient of the Annika Rodriguez scholarship, Security Service Federal Credit Union scholarship, UTSA Summer Research Program scholarship, Siemen's Regional Finalist scholarship, among others. While in school, he was the percussion section leader, UIL math and science team president, engineering team captain, and science bowl captain.

Christopher Luis Cervantes, this year's salutatorian at Marshall High School, plans to attend MIT in Cambridge, Mass majoring in biological engineering and political science. The son of José and Darnell Cervantes, he is the recipient of the Eugene and Margaret McDermott scholarship, Hispanic Youth Award scholarship, National Honor Society scholarship, and several science fair scholarships. While in school, he served as the Mu Alpha Theta president, National Honor Society chair, Rampage copy editor, Ram Science Research Society, and UIL Math and Science team.

"I would like to thank all my family and friends for their invaluable support, as well as my teachers, without whom none of this would have been possible," Cervantes said. "I would also like to give a big congratulations to all the graduating members of the John Marshall Class of 2009, and hope that we all continue dreaming new dreams."

The commencement ceremonies for Marshall High School will be held Thursday, June 11 at 4 p.m. at the Alamodome.

O'Connor High School

Mu Li, this year's valedictorian at O'Connor High School, plans to attend Yale University majoring in biology. The son of Qiusheng Tong and Xiaonan Li, he is the recipient of the National Merit scholarship, San Antonio Junior Forum Presidential scholarship, Yale scholarship, among others. While in school, he was the captain of the math/science team, captain of the Junior Engineering Technical Society team, and captain of the Science Bowl.

Ruoheng Zhang is the O'Connor High School salutatorian. This fall, she plans to attend Duke University in Durham, N.C. majoring in biology. The daughter of Yingpei Zhang and Yuping Tang, she is the recipient of a National Merit scholarship, Medina Valley UIL scholarship, Spurs/CPS Energy scholarship, Northside ATPE scholarship, among others. While in school, she was captain of the Academic Decathlon team, captain of the Math and Science team, and President of the Latin Club.

The commencement ceremonies for O'Connor High School will be held Thursday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Stevens High School

Ryan Culotta, the valedictorian for Stevens High School, plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin majoring in music education. The son of Michael and Lynette Culotta, he is the recipient of the Valero Alamo Bowl scholarship and Baylor presidential scholarship. While in school, he was the co-captain of the varsity baseball team, drum line captain, National Honor Society member, and member of the Band Council.

"I would like to thank my parents, grandparents, Coach Rogers, Coach Alvarado, Mr. Rubio, Mr. Dominguez, and Mr. Turpin for their continued guidance and support," he said.

Rachel Gutierrez, this year's salutatorian for Stevens HS, plans to attend St. Mary's University majoring in criminal justice. The daughter of Joe Gutierrez and Rosario Gutierrez, she is the recipient of the St. Mary's Presidential Scholarship. While in school, she was involved with the National Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society, Peer Assistance and Leadership for Students (PALS), and served as captain of the Volleyball team and class vice president.

"I would like to thank my parents, sisters, teachers, coaches, friends and teammates for the loving encouragement that has allowed me to accomplish many things," she said.

The commencement ceremonies for Stevens High School will be held Tuesday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Taft High School

David Spellman, this year's valedictorian at Taft High School, plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station majoring in computer science. The son of Judy Spellman and Gregory Spellman, he is the recipient of numerous scholarships including the Security Service Federal Credit Union scholarship, A&M Community Connections Scholarship, and Century Scholarship. While in school, he served as president of the National Technical Honor Society, and treasurer of the Spanish National Honor Society.

"I would like to thank all of my friends who supported me in high school," he said.

Justin Daniel Rodriguez is the Taft High School salutatorian. This fall, he plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin majoring in mathematics. The son of Abel J. and Diane M. Rodriguez, he is the recipient of the President's Gold Scholarship. While in school, he was active in the Taft Raider Marching Band, National Honor Society, and Boy Scouts of America, of which he is an Eagle Scout.

"I would like to thank my mom, dad and family for all their support, he said." "I would also like to thank my teachers for the impact they have made."

The commencement ceremonies for Taft High School will be held Friday, June 12 at 4 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Warren High School

Saskia Versteeg, this year's valedictorian at Warren High School, plans to attend The University of Texas at Dallas majoring in physics. The daughter of Maarten and Marion Versteeg, she is the recipient of the McDermott Scholarship from the University of Texas at Dallas for a full scholarship (including a study abroad, internships, and stipend), and the Academic Decathlon scholarship for placing 5th overall individually at the state competition. While in school, she served as National Honor Society president, Interact president, a member of the Academic Decathlon team, and voted "Most Likely to Succeed."

Sierra van den Dries is the Warren High School salutatorian. This fall, she plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin majoring in biology and biomedical engineering. The daughter of Gerard and Denise van den Dries, she is the recipient of the Northeastern University Dean's Scholarship, Tulane University Dean's Scholarship, Grinnell College Trustee Honor Scholarship, and the Fred and Lorece Harding Scholarship. While in school, she was Miss Warren High School, a member of the Academic Decathlon Team, Majestics Varsity Dance Team Social Officer, NHS Vice President, and on the San Antonio Express-News "A Team."

The commencement ceremonies for Warren High School will be held Tuesday, June 9 at 4 p.m. at the Alamodome.
