Burke teacher named Region 20 Teacher of the Year

Maricela Alarcon, a bilingual teacher at Burke Elementary School, has been named the Region 20 Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2010.

A panel of judges selected Alarcon from among fellow Teachers of the Year from districts across the region. Alarcon's nomination now will be sent to the Texas Education Agency, where she will be in the running for the statewide Teacher of the Year.

In April, Alarcon was named a finalist in the Rising Star Elementary category of the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, the state's biggest recognition program of educators. And in March, she was named the 2009 Northside Elementary Educator of the Year.

Alarcon has taught at Burke since 2005.
