Northside ISD will begin H1N1 vaccinations of elementary school students beginning Jan. 7.

A schedule of which schools will be offering vaccinations Jan. 7 to Jan. 15 is located on the District's flu information web site.

A letter is being sent to all parents of affected schools and also is posted on the flu information web site. All children must turn in a permission slip and complete a questionnaire in order for their child to receive the shot.

Children 9 years of age and younger will need to receive a second shot roughly three to four weeks after receiving the first shot. Parents must turn in a second permission slip in order for their children to receive the second shot.

If a child 9 or younger receives a first dose at school but is unable to get the second dose, a parent can take the child to his or her physician to receive the second shot at a later date. The vaccine still will be effective even if more than four weeks have passed between the first and second shots, said Don Schmidt, Assistant Superintendent for Student, Family & Community Services.

The District will release a vaccination schedule for additional elementary schools as soon as more vaccine becomes available through the San Antonio Metro Health District.
