Students across the District celebrated and recognized the Thanksgiving season in different ways. Here are just a few examples.

Driggers ES

Pictured are the teachers from the three classrooms raising the most money Queen Turkey Irene Garza, fourth grade (pictured center); and her court hens Donna Pastrano, second grade; and Jennifer Smith, fourth grade.

The Student Council at Driggers ES sponsored their second annual "Feather the Turkey" drive. Each teacher was given a featherless friend (turkey) and their students were asked to buy feathers for 25 cents each. Each feather that was purchased was then used to "dress" the turkey. An astonishing $1,948.38 was raised from the feather purchases. Last year the students raised about $700, so Driggers students more than doubled that amount this year. The money was used to purchase Thanksgiving gift certificates from Bill Millers, and were given to Drigger's families in need, who received a turkey, dressing and gravy.

The students, working with parent volunteers, were divided into groups of four or five to measure the width and length of the pumpkin, estimate the number of seeds in their pumpkin, and then verify the actual number by counting the seeds.

Elrod ES

Students shown are also participating in the Geography t-shirt contest on Geography Day.

The Student Council at Elrod ES raised money for Thanksgiving dinners for needy families by selling turkey feathers for a quarter each to "Feather the Turkey" outside each classroom.

Fernandez ES

After preparing all week, ALE students at Fernandez ES prepared two dishes, set the table, and helped clean up after the meal. It was a great experience for them, as well as self-esteem builder.

Hatchett ES

The entire third grade class at Hatchett ES presented a program titled "A Time to Give Thanks." The students sang and spoke about the history of Thanksgiving, with some students dressing as turkeys and giving a bit of a "turkey trot" performance. Music teacher is Kathy Ransdell and Art Specialist is Mary Sue Villanueva.

Hoffmann ES

Pictured are Hoffmann Principal Levinia Lara and Westwood Terrace Principal Gracie Guess.

Thanksgiving Food Drive & Winter Book Drive: As part of a Communities in Schools service project, the Hoffmann PTA sponsored a food drive for Thanksgiving and a book drive before Christmas which benefited students and families at Westwood Terrace ES.

Holiday at the Ranch: On Dec. 8, Hoffmann hosted its first Holiday at the Ranch family event. The evening began with a concert performed by the Hoffmann Chorus and Fifth Grade Strings. After, families attended sessions where they listened to holiday stories and made crafts and edible treats to take home.

Polar Express Day: On Dec. 16, the students and staff of Hoffmann dressed in their jammies and gathered in the library to experience this Christmas classic movie. Principal Levinia Lara read the story, displayed the pictures through a projection system, and handed out silver bell to each child.

Jefferson MS

Some of the results from that food drive.

Jefferson MS Eagles understood the meaning of giving this Thanksgiving holiday.

During the month of November, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and Student Council collected canned foods and non-perishables for the San Antonio Food Bank.

Langley ES

Pictured are PE teachers Mike Massa and Debra Gonzaba with Grand Prize Winner CMC Instructional Assistant Lara Lugo.

The physical education teachers at Langley ES held an inaugural Turkey Bowling Tournament. Staff members were invited to the gym to bowl using an 11 lb. frozen turkey during their conference time while the physical education classes cheered them on. The three staff members with the highest bowling scores received turkeys.

Nichols ES

Enjoying their lunchtime meal together are Hailey Connell, Sydney English, and Michael Friesel.

Second graders at Nichols ES had the opportunity to step back in time to the first Thanksgiving, studying its history and making period costumes for themselves.

Timberwilde ES

Della Mancha (pictured) is bowling a turkey in Timberwilde's annual Turkey bowl, a Thanksgiving tradition. The last day before the Thanksgiving holiday, teachers and students go to the gym during their specialists' time to bowl the ninth and tenth frame. The top two bowlers of the faculty and staff win a Turkey for their Thanksgiving feast. The top grade level bowlers win a pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

Warren HS

Culinary Arts students from Warren HS prepared and served a holiday meal for everyone who works at the Culebra (Bus) Transportation Station. The menu included roasted turkey, baked ham, sausage dressing, whipped potatoes, gourmet sweet potatoes, fresh cranberry dressing, green bean casserole, buttered corn, and pumpkin and pecan pies.

It took two buses to transport all the students and their equipment. The students served 200 people. Pictured are Ashley Hernandez, Chloe Gustke, Summer James, Manual Losoya, Justine Aranda, Celina Palacios, and Andrea Reyna. Irma Garcia was Mrs. Santa Claus.
