Aquatics Center named for George Block

The Board of Trustees officially dedicated the George Block Aquatics Center during a special naming ceremony at the facility, located in the Hardin Athletic Complex at Loop 410 and Culebra Road.

Block opened the Aquatics Center in 1978 and was the driving force behind the development of Northside's Aquatics program.

Block, who retired in 2009 after more than 30 years as Aquatics Director, coached future national, international, and Olympic swimmers at the Aquatics Center. He also started the District's water polo teams and the Elementary Learn to Swim Program, so that every student in Northside received swimming lessons as part of the district's physical education curriculum.

In more recent years, George was instrumental in the development of the District's second natatorium, which opened in 2006, and in the effort to secure funding for a yet-to-built outdoor swim stadium.

Block has been honored numerous times for his coaching, including being named the Top Aquatics Director by the United States Water Fitness Association in 1997.

Since his retirement from NISD, Block has served as Vice President for Partnerships and Chief Operating Officer of Haven for Hope, an agency that provides social services to San Antonio's homeless community.

Anyone who would like a DVD of the naming ceremony can contact the Communications Department at 397-8550. The DVD will cost $5 and can be picked up at Central Office, 5900 Evers Road, or the DVD can be mailed for an additional $2.50 fee.
