Thirty-nine thousand students at 49 Northside ISD schools will receive free breakfast and lunch this coming school year thanks to the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act which will provide the financial support needed, according to Dr. Brian T. Woods, superintendent.

For Jay Sumpter, Principal of the Jay Science and Engineering Academy, leading students down the path of innovation in STEM fields is reward enough. But, in front of several hundred of his peers at the annual Administrator Institute, Sumpter was named the recipient of the 2015 Ed Rawlinson Innovator of the Year award.

Because more than 5,000 Northside ISD students still need updated immunizations before the start of the school year, University Health System is offering a convenient way for parents to immunize their children. They will dispatch a mobile clinic that will visit 6 middle school campuses in August.

So You Think You Can Dance is a popular reality television show, but the reality of watching the San Antonio Deaf Dance Company perform is truly show-stopping. The Company’s public performance is Friday, July 31 at 7 p.m. in the Marshall High School Auditorium, 8000 Lobo Lane. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

Northside ISD has partnered with Methodist Health Care to offer baseline concussion testing to middle and high school athletes. Every year, more than three million sports-related concussions occur, mostly in middle and high school athletes. To that end, NISD athletes have the opportunity to participate in an ImPACT® Baseline Concussion Test on Saturday, July 25 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Methodist Health Care System, 8109 Fredericksburg Road. Northside ISD is holding an Auxiliary Job Fair to fill more than 400 positions for bus drivers, food service workers, food service manager trainees, police officers, custodians, and maintenance workers.

It is time for families to start updating their immunizations in order to be prepared to return to school for the 2015-16 school year. Some students may not have the requisite number of shots and not know it due to the state increasing the number of shots required at various grade levels.

Since 1991, the NISD Board of Trustees signs a Code of Ethics annually, reaffirming their commitment to adhere to educational and ethical standards. According to Superintendent Brian Woods, NISD is probably one of very few Districts where the Board and Superintendent (on behalf of the staff) sign a code of ethics.

Last night, Trustees discussed and took action on several items: named NISD's newest high school after a United States Supreme Court Justice, signed a Code of Ethics reaffirming their commitment to adhere to ethical and educational standards, and appointed several campus administrators including a new principal for Marshall HS.

Students from five NISD middle schools are exhibiting art work they created this summer at the “Young Picasso” Summer Cultural Fine Arts Summer Camp. Their art exhibit will be held on Thursday, June 25 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Holmes High School. It is free and open to the public.

For the next two years, Taft High School will cap attendance. This means that any new-to-Taft students who move into certain parts of the Taft attendance zone will be temporarily capped (moved) to Brennan High School which still has some room and is close to Taft.

To comply with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations, Northside ISD will once again offer free meals to children starting June 8. This year, free meals are available at 17 schools for children who are 18 years or younger.

At the June 16 School Board Meeting, Northside ISD Trustees approved a $21.4 million compensation package that will provide salary increases for more than 14,000 employees. The raise includes a 3 percent increase for most employees, but transportation, custodial, and child nutrition workers will see a larger increase. Raises are effective for the new school year.
