The Northside Board of Trustees is appreciative of the continued support of the residents, taxpayers, and parents of this District and we work with you and our Legislators to improve the state of public education in Texas. It is expected that the state will appeal Judge Deitz’s ruling on the inadequacy, inefficiency, and the unconstitutionality of school finance.

Northside students continue to excel and receive numerous honors and awards. Below is the list of students who were named national merit semifinalists or commended scholars, scholar finalists in the 2012-13 National Hispanic Recognition Program, and National Achievement Scholar semifinalists.

Northside ISD Trustees passed a Resolution that rejects all attempts by Texas Legislators to divert tax dollars away from public schools in the form of vouchers or any other mechanisms that reduce funding to public schools. See full Resolution here

Since Rayburn Middle School, Glenn Elementary School, and Powell Elementary School opened 50 years ago, the schools have educated thousands of children and become cornerstones in the communities. The trio will be celebrating their golden anniversaries, and are inviting current and former students and staff to join them.

Northside ISD has just launched an iPhone and iPad app that provides community members a quick, easy, and mobile phone-friendly way to access information about NISD schools and services, including campus phone numbers and addresses, cafeteria menus, and district news and events. Similar to many of you, I watched with horror the events of last Friday in Newtown, CT. As an educator and a parent the event was particularly painful. We all grieve for those involved in this tragedy. In Northside, many have asked about our security procedures and some have expressed interest in more security measures being installed. I wanted to update you on the measures we have in place and where we plan to go in the future with respect to school safety.

We constantly debate the appropriate measure of security to have on a campus. We try to balance the use of technology and restricting access with the notion of school being a welcoming place for students, parents and volunteers. We will continue that debate.

While there is no indication that this is anything but an isolated incident in a state far from Texas, Northside ISD is very sensitive to concerns and questions from parents about our own crisis procedures.

Although Learning Tree can accommodate up to 160 students at certain sites, there is an average teacher to student ratio of 1 to 18. The staff includes after school program specialists, site leaders, and youth leaders, many of whom are college students studying to become teachers.

Northside ISD is holding a job fair for bus drivers, instructional assistant substitutes, food service workers, and food service manager trainees from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Dec. 17 at the Northside Activity Center, 7001 Culebra Road.

For the first time, three Northside ISD football teams have advanced to the state quarterfinals, being held this weekend at the Alamodome. To celebrate this historic achievement, the public is invited to attend a pep rally for Brandeis, Brennan and O’Connor high schools at 7 p.m. Thursday at Farris Stadium.

More students are graduating from Northside ISD high schools than ever before. For the Class of 2011, the District’s completion rate is 95.7 percent, and the graduation rate is 91.7 percent. Statistics for the Class of 2012 won’t be available until next year.
