Washington Mutual, believing in the power of education, is the latest corporate citizen to join Northside as an official business partner. The newest business partner recently announced a huge relocation of corporate headquarters in San Antonio. In addition, Washington Mutual has 20 branches located all around the city.

Joni Baird, vice president of Corporate Giving for Washington Mutual, presented Dr. John Folks with a $20,000 check to be used for relief for students displaced by recent hurricanes and for professional staff development for teachers.

âWe are thrilled to be able to make this kind of contribution to the school district,â Baird said.

âBut we are here for more than just the money,â she added. âOur two focuses for giving is on affordable housing and K-12 education. Because of that, we conduct financial literacy and savings courses for high school students, we offer a high school internship program, and our employees volunteer in the schools.â

âWe want to be a good corporate citizen in the communities where we do business,â she said.

Equally thrilled with the donation, Superintendent Folks said, âWe want to thank Washington Mutual for this donation, and, we look forward to you being a good partner with Northside for many years to come.â

Folks said that the money would be used for staff development at Business Careers High School to assist in a reorganization of its curriculum.
