It takes a tech-savvy student to nab a “Digi.”

More than 850 students from across the District went home with a “Digi” award – short for digital – after Northside’s fifth annual Digital Media Fair last month.

The Digital Media Fair recognizes and celebrates student work created through the use of technology, such as desktop publishing, web site design, and video animation.

“Our goal in developing this event was to capitalize on the way students entertain themselves today by using the same media to engage students in learning,” said Kelly Smith, assistant superintendent for Technology Services.

More than 75 first place projects were showcased during the Digital Media Fair, held in the Warren High School auditorium May 23 and 24.
This year, students in all grade levels submitted more than 1,135 entries in 14 categories and 3 large team categories.

“We’ve almost doubled the number of students who were recognized by adding new categories,” said Dana Bickley, co-coordinator of the fair with Mary McBeth. “The fair has grown so much since we first started.”

Student projects were judged on their content, originality, purpose, age-appropriate complexity, graphic design, technical quality, copyright compliance, and grammar and spelling (if applicable).

“It's such a joy to see so many students who are able to combine creativity, technology, and academic content into such amazing projects,” Smith said. “The projects get more and more sophisticated every year.”
