Northside students celebrated Veterans Day in true red, white, and blue spirit with special recognition ceremonies across the District earlier this week.
Many schools, including Zachry Middle School and Carson Elementary School, featured musical programs, high school JROTCs, local veterans, and guest speakers who talked about the contributions of members of the armed services.
At Oak Hills Terrace Elementary School, two military vehicles were on display and members of the San Antonio Pipes and Drums played bagpipes.
Nichols Elementary School created a "Wall of Honor," which posted the names of relatives of students who currently or previously served the United States in a branch of service. In addition, distinguished guest Lt. Col. Talmadge Gaither, who recently served in Afghanistan, spoke to the audience of students, teachers, and community members.
Brandeis High School students and staff gathered around the flagpole early Tuesday morning to watch the JROTC unit pay homage to veterans who work in the District's central administrative offices.
The children and staff at Glass Elementary celebrated Veterans Day by videoconferencing with one of America's soldiers, who happens to be married to kindergarten teacher Monica Verastegui. Sgt. 1st Class Jesse Verastegui, who has been in Iraq since March, answered children's questions and thanked them for their support.
At May Elementary, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Robert L. Pelegreen spoke to students about the meaning of Veterans Day and the importance of reading in their lives. Taps also was played to remember servicemen who gave their lives for our country.
Throughout the District, teachers took the time to teach lessons to students about veterans, their sacrifices, and their impact on history.
