School trustees voted to honor the District’s heritage by naming the “Bandera Road north area” elementary school after one of the 12 original rural schools that joined together in 1949 to create Northside ISD. Funded by School Bond 2007, Los Reyes Elementary will be the only school to open in 2012. It is located north on Bandera Road, outside Loop 1604 in the Triana subdivision. The address is 10785 Triana Pkwy.

NISD Board President Karen Freeman has been elected to a three-year term on the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors, representing TASB Region 20B. The region encompasses 15 counties in Central Texas and includes 50 school districts with 500 schools, 40,000 total staff (of which 20,000 are teachers), and over 300,000 students.

The Northside ISD Board of Trustees Tuesday night approved a $1.013 billion budget and a 1-cent tax increase for the 2011-12 school year. The tax rate will rise from $1.3655 to $1.3755 in order to pay off bonds for new schools and renovation and expansion projects. Despite the increase, the tax rate is 6 cents lower than what was projected when voters passed School Bond 2010.
