Anna Mae 'Mas' Nichols
|
Northside Independent School District has a policy of naming elementary schools after the neighborhoods in which the school is located or in honor of individuals who have made a significant contribution to education. The Northside ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name this school for Anna Mae 'Mas' Nichols. According to former Superintendent Ed Rawlinson, "One of the greatest tributes we can make to educators who have devoted their lives to children is to name a school in their honor. There are literally thousands and thousands of children whose lives have been positively influenced by Mas Nichols." Mas Nichols served as a teacher at Helotes Elementary School for 25 years and also taught in the San Antonio and Alamo Heights ISD's. After her retirment in 1990, she formed the GrandPALS organization of senior citizens who serve as mentors of Helotes Elementary. Nichols served on the Grey Forest City Council and was the first president of the Marshall High School FFA Booster Club. She received the Northside Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1993 and the Yellow Rose of Texas Award from the Constance Allen Heritage Guild for Lifetime Learning. Rawlinson adds,"Nichols has been an outstanding teacher and unselfish community servant. She will be a positive role model for many more children in her new role as a school namesake." | |||
