San Antonio and its surrounding areas are culturally rich and diverse, and offer a wonderful variety of art experiences for your family. Some museums offer regular family activities, so check around and take advantage of as many as you can!
The McNay Museum
This museum, on absolutely gorgeous grounds, has an exciting new building
opening June, 2008.
Although the McNay used to be free to the public, there is now an admission
of $8.00/adult and $5.00/child.
Their permanent collection features artwork by Picasso, Monet, and
O’Keeffe, to name a few.
Special exhibits often include sessions with the artist, in which the
artist will discuss their work and its inspirations.
The McNay also offers a family program often held on the last Sunday
of the month. This program usually includes hands-on art activities
for children that are based on a current exhibit. A word of advice:
call ahead to see if space is limited, as sometimes they only have a specific
number of spaces available.
Visit the McNay online at www.mcnayart.org
or call them at 824-5368.
The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA)
Located downtown in a restored brewery, SAMA is truly a comprehensive
lesson in art history. Artworks from ancient civilizations to present
day are represented from sites around the globe. SAMA also has opportunities
for family activities on the first Sunday of each month. SAMA is
closed on Mondays and does charge an admission fee. See what they
have to offer at www.sa-museum.org
or call them at 978-8100.
Southwest School of Art and Craft
This campus is located along the river downtown, and is really a school.
It has wonderful historic grounds that are also picturesque, and student
work is exhibited regularly. They offer an extensive selection of
classes for children and adults.
Check out their summer schedule!
During the school year, SWSAC offers Saturday explorations which are
free,month-long sessions,
but you must register in order to attend.
Find them online at www.swschool.org
or call them at 224-1848.
Witte Museum
The Witte has some exhibits that have been there since I
was in elementary school, but it does offer special exhibits as well.
This summer, an outstanding exhibit on Leonardo da Vinci is scheduled.
The Witte is primarily a Science/Social Studies based collection,
offering many hands-on exhibits and a special Science Treehouse along the
San Antonio River which is included in the entrance fee. Admission
is free on Tuesdays after 3:00 p.m. See what’s going on at the Witte
online at www.wittemuseum.org
or call them at 357-1900.
