Mrs. Espericueta
My name is Mary Espericueta.  I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 with a degree in Education.  I have taught for 17 years- all in Special Education.  I taught for 2 years in Austin before moving to San Antonio and working for Northside.  From 1990-1995, I taught at Northside Children's Center and in 1995, I joined the staff at Northwest Crossing Elementary School.  I recieved my master's degree in Special Education from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1993. Currently, I teach in the Applied Learning Environment (ALE) classroom where I work with some very special children!

ALE - Applied Learning Environment
The ALE Program provides special needs students with an educational program that will enable them to achieve their highest levels of independence as adults.

Students learn Functional Life Skills such as:

  • Functional Academics - important skills in oral language, survival reading and functional math
  • Community Based Instruction - (NOT Field Trips), safety, requesting, social skills, purchasing process, etc
  • Personal Management - self help, social interactions, personal hygiene skills, COMMUNICATION
  • Vocational - work jobs, following directions, signing name
  • Recreation / leisure - interacting with peers, taking turns, playing games, finding hobbies.
