Casting
Policy:
The theatre production director(s) must think that educational theatre
is, above all, theatre in an educational framework, not education in a
theatrical framework. The nature of the
production of a play or musical demands that it must be as skillfully staged,
acted, designed and lighted as it is possible within the resources and talent
pool of the producing group.
For all open auditions the students are to prepare required material to
best present their strongest assets while keeping within the director's style
and concept of the production's artist work.
To aide the student in preparing for the particular production an
audition package is provided. All
students may request explanation of the audition requirements and/or attend
scheduled audition workshop sessions.
It is the student's responsibility to request coaching sessions.
Encouragement of students to
audition should not be viewed as pre-selection. It is the casting directors job
to recruit as many students for the open auditions as possible so that the best
possible choice can be made for the particular production. Through this process the casting director
must tread that delicate balance between encouragement and perceived
pre-casting by students. All auditions
at OCH are open and happy surprises of an unknown talent, character type or
skill can and do result. Class standing,
rank, grade level, experience in Fine Arts classes, professional experience,
etc. does not guarantee certain groups of students privileged status over
"walk-in" or "first timer" students to the specific
production's auditions.
It is the job of the director(s) to determine where in the production
students can most strongly be placed to
complete the ensemble and company group that will best serve the requirements
and artistic style of the production.
Subsequently a student may be placed in a role other than that in which
they auditioned.
It takes the talents
of an entire company to mount a successful production no matter what the weight
of the role, crew position or amount of stage time. It possible for all students to grow and
achieve no matter where they are placed in the production as long as they allow
themselves to view every production assignment as a challenge and team building
opportunity.
For those that are not cast in a particular production they may still be
involved with the team effort by applying for crew or front of house
positions. It is our goal to involve as
many students as possible within the requirements of each production.

Show Pledge Contract -- THEATRE PRODUCTION 1, 2, 3, 4 page 2 of 2
STUDENT NAME:

ID#:_____________GRADE:____
Rehearsals: Conduct required as described in Theatre Production 1, 2, 3, 4 Production Handbook. See the production schedule and check the call board daily! Also look at the online calendar.
Attendance
and Punctuality: Prompt
attendance at school and rehearsals are critical and will be dealt with
accordingly. Everyone’s time is very valuable
and if any company member is absent, the process is delayed and the absence is
official counted towards requirements for class credit. Regardless of what your duty is in the
production, everyone is expected to work as a team and help in every area of
production. Actors are crew too. With that in mind:
o Call (210) 397-4756 and leave a message, if, due to circumstances beyond your control (illness, family emergency, transportation problem…) if you anticipate being late or absent.
o Notify us as soon as possible so we may make any necessary changes in the scheduled activities.
o Any conflicts with the rehearsal schedule should be listed at the time of auditions so we may schedule rehearsals to best work around the student’s conflicts.
· Policy: Unpleasant as it may seem, three strikes and you are out of the play. A strike could be an unexcused absence or 3 tardies. A strike could be not completing a duty or responsibility that is expected of your role. Please read over your handbook to fully understand our expectations.
Scripts: You will be supplied with scripts and/or music for the production. These texts must be returned undamaged. If a student damages or loses a text they will be fined or charged for the item.
Costumes: The Theatre Department will provide for the construction, purchase, or rental of the costumes worn by the students. On such productions where a costume use fee is attached students may facilitate such fee through the production fund raiser or if not met by deadline, provide as an out of pocket expense. Some minor accessories may need to be purchased by the student and will remain the property of said student. However, if the student loses or damages his or her costume, he or she will be responsible for the cost of replacing or repairing the garment. Space is provided in each dressing room for the correct storage of all assigned costumes and accessories. Failure to secure costumes properly after rehearsal/performance may result in a reduction of final course grade.
Props: Our crews work very hard to get props for the production. If a student loses or damages his or her prop they are responsible for replacing that prop.
Lock Up: Each student in the Theatre Production class will be issued a backstage dressing room locker. The student is responsible to bring a lock to secure the locker and must provided the director(s) with a copy of the combination. The locker will be cleaned out closing night of the production, including the student’s lock. Personal valuables are the student’s responsibility; the department is not responsible for damage and/or theft.
o I accept the role/position of:____________________________________________________________
in the production of:__________________________________________________________________
With production dates of:______________________________________________________________ and fully understand that I was chosen over many other students and as such will fulfill all expectations as outlined in the Theatre Production Handbook and the Student Show Pledge and Contract.
