How many points do I need?
Members are required to earn 3 tutoring points (1.5 hours) and 3 bistro points (1.5 hours) each semester for 6 total points. Every 30 minutes equals 1 point.
What are tutoring hours?
Tutoring requires you to help out an O'Connor student on campus. You can accomplish this by setting this up with a teacher, Math Mondays, or contacting our Student Success advisors Mrs. Carr or Mrs. Womack in the A building.
What are bistro hours?
One of the services NHS provides the OHS community is free coffee every morning in the library. Because this is such a popular event, volunteers are a neccessity. To earn hours, you can either volunteer your time in the morning to help serve, or donate supplies like coffee, Splenda, napkins, paper cups, spoons, etc. Contact Mr. Strawn for more details.
What happens if I do not earn enough hours or I do not pay my dues?
If either points or dues are not turned in at the deadline, you will receive a letter notifiying you that you are on probabtion. Probabtion lasts for 2 weeks. By the end of those two weeks, you must have completed your points or paid your dues and turned them in. If you fail to do this, you will be dismissed from NHS.
Where do I turn in my points?
There is a library in the box labeled NHS. Please turn in all points into this box by the deadline. Do not give them to an officer to turn them in for you.
Who keeps track of my points?
You do. With over 200 members, it is next to impossible for four people to keep track of your points. However, whenever you tutor or bistro, you MUST get a teacher signature . No signature, no points.
How can I be a member of NHS?
Juniors who meet the GPA criteria of a 90.00 will be contacted at school in the Spring semester. Those who are interested will be able to download and complete an application for consideration for NHS.
What if I received a letter at home telling me I was eligible for an honors society? Is NHS the same thing?
No. We will only contact you at school. Across the country, unscrupulous money-making companies target students and have tricked families into paying money for the "distinction" of becoming a member of an "honor society". This is in no way affiliated with the National Honor Society.
