Technical Theatre 1 (9-12) Technical Theatre I is a project based class within the theatrical arts curriculum at the high school level focusing on the design process, construction and implementation of the various technical aspects of a production. Studentslearn lighting basics, audio design, effective make-up application, construction techniques, as well as costume design and construction. Students desiring to excel in skills related to technical theatre are welcome to participate in activities occurring outside the academic school day. No prior theatre experience is required to be eligible for this course. PR: None SEM : 2 CR: 1

Technical Theatre 2, 3, 4 (10-12) These courses are a continuation of Technical Theatre I in which students assume a leadership role in the design and construction of elements required for theatrical productions such as lighting, sound, scenic elements, properties, and costumes. Technical Theatre 1

Perception:

The student develops concepts about self, human relationships, and environment, using elements of drama and conventions of theatre.

 

Rationale:

Students increase their understanding of self and others, and develop clear ideas about the world by:
--developing awareness of their own beliefs and attitudes through the exploration of theatrical texts, productions,and performances.
-- using personal perceptions, observations, and experiences in the creation of original and scripted performances.
--interpreting and analyzing sensory and emotional perceptions to better understand their role in the theatre

As a result, they understand the interdependence of all theatrical elements and arrive at their own knowledge and beliefs while making artistic decisions.

 

Benchmarks:

Upon completion of Technical Theatre I, the student will:
1. Exhibits understanding of the language of stage terminology.
2. Exhibits ability to communicate emotional fluidity through scenic/light/sound design.
3. Exhibits understanding of scenery and costume functionality as described by the script.
4. Recognizes style choice defines overall production visual and audio affect as it pertains to authors intent.
5. Exhibits understanding in theatre hierarchy and job responsibilities.
6. Exhibits understanding of the areas and locations on stage.

 

Creative Expression/Performance:

The student interprets characters, using the voice and body expressively, and creates dramatizations.
The student applies design, directing, and theatre production concepts and skills.

Upon completion of Technical Theatre I, the student will:
1. Demonstrate proper tool use and safety.
2. Analyze scripts for technical requirements.
3. Exhibits understanding of basic 2-D construction techniques.
4. Exhibits understanding of basic 3-D construction techniques.
5. Comprehends various scene-painting techniques and their use on stage scenery/props.
6. Demonstrate theatrical drafting skills and use of scale ruler.
7. Understands the role of publicity and house management as it pertains to final production projects.

 

Historical/Cultural Heritage:

The student relates theatre to history, society, and culture.

Students increase their understanding of heritage and traditions through period styles in theatrical forms by:
--analyzing, performing, and/or exhibiting period theatrical forms.
--using their understanding of elements in theatre heritage to address specific production challenges.

As a result, they understand and explore the interconnection of theatre with historical events, sociological trends, and cultural attitudes.

Benchmarks:

Upon completion of Technical Theatre I, the student will:
1. Exhibits understanding for design line in theatrical history and style.
2. Exhibits understanding of the 7 basic design styles and how they translate to the stage.
3. Exhibits ability to apply the applications of qualities of light and functions of stage lighting.
4. Aware of changing technology throughout history and it’s impact on theatre productions of the time.

The student responds to and evaluates theatre and theatrical performances.

Students understand the value of presentation and demonstrate appropriate audience etiquette by:
--assessing the value of theatrical presentation in written and oral form.
--exhibiting discriminating tastes through appropriate audience behavior.
--accepting and offering critiques in a positive and constructive manner.
--using qualitative judgment and the higher-order thinking skills of analysis and synthesis to understand the performing arts.

As a result, they are better able to appreciate and evaluate the entire process of theatrical production.

Upon completion of Technical Theatre I, the student will:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and use of peer/self evaluation techniques.

•  Assist in student lab productions in forms of technical support and management.
