FICTION BOOKS - A made-up story

 

§       List the characters in the book. Which character do you think might be a good friend. Tell why you think this character would be a good friend for you.

 

§       Tell one (1) clue from the story which helps you know where this story happened and one (1) clue from the story which helps you know when it happened.

 

§       How would you change the ending of your book? Write a new ending for this story. What would happen to the characters?

 

§       Construct a bubble map to describe your favorite character. Put the name of the character in the middle. Around the name, tell important things about this character.

 

§       Create a flow chart showing the order important events happened in the story. You can use words or pictures on your flow chart to tell what happened.

 

§       Choose a character from your book and make a "hand poem" about him or her. Trace your hand on drawing paper. Write the name of the character on the hand and write 5 different things about that character on the fingers.

 

§       If your book is a made-up fiction story, select the most important part of the story and draw a picture of that part. On the drawing paper, write why this is the most important part to you.

 

§       Using drawing paper, draw your favorite part of the story. Write the book title and the author somewhere on your picture. On the back, tell why this is your favorite part.

 

§       Using the PUNCTUATION SEARCH handout, look in your book for sentences which end with each kind of punctuation.

 

§       Make a STORY PYRAMID about your book.

 

 

§       Using the INVESTIGATION REPORTING handout, write one question about your book for each fact question: Who, What, Where, When, and Why or How.

 

§       Find 4 words from your book which you do not know. Complete the WORD CARDS handout by looking up the definitions for these words.

 

 

NON-FICTION BOOKS-Information books and fairy tales, folk tales, tall tales

 

§       If you have read a non-fiction information book (not a fairy tale, folk tale, tall tale), complete the NON-FICTION BOOK HELPERS handout.

 

§       Be the teacher and create at least 4 questions about things in this book. Include an answer key.

 

§       Create at least 1 good sentence telling something you learned from this information book which you did not already know. Using your best handwriting, write the name of the book, the author, and this sentence on drawing paper. Draw pictures around it which help us know more about your book.

 

§       Choose 5 important words from your book and write them in alphabetical order.

 

§       Draw or cut out pictures to make a mobile about your book. You can hang the pictures on a clothes hanger from home or some other way to hang a mobile which you might know.

 

§       Make a diorama of the non-fiction subject of your book.

 

§       Using the WORD SEARCH handout, choose 10 important words from your book and “hide” them on the Word Search puzzle.

 

§       If your book is a fairy tale, folk tale, or tall tale, select the most important part of the story and draw a picture of that part. On the drawing paper, write why this is the most important part to you.
